There’s a somber feeling hovering over the Capital One Arena following a three-goal barrage by the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets in the second period of Sunday’s Game 2 contest against the Washington Capitals. With the home team trailing 4-3 late, another somber moment occurred involving an official.
Linesman Steve Barton suffered an apparent leg injury as he fell down following a face-off just ahead of the end of the second period. He laid on the ice holding his knee for several minutes as trainers and medical personnel rushed to the ice to attend to him. Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was seen waving for the stretcher as Barton was being attended to.
Video shows that Barton appeared to inadvertently clipped by Blue Jackets right wing Josh Anderson before going down.
Capitals public relations announced that Barton would not return to officiate the game and was being replaced by Garrett Rank.
