Wayne Rooney to D.C. United is reportedly inching closer to reality.
Sky Sports News reports the Everton forward has agreed in principle to a deal worth $16.2 million to join the MLS and play for D.C. United. The deal would run through the end of the 2020 MLS season.
“Sky Sports News understands this latest deal was drafted over the past seven weeks, during several visits to the States by [Rooney’s agent Paul] Stretford alongside DC United’s chief executive Jason Levein,” continued the report.
The report adds that it would take a “significant change of heart” within Rooney and his family for the deal to fall apart.
However, Steve Goff of the Washington Post, who covers D.C. United reports both sides are close but a deal has not been finalized and may take at least a week or so.

D.C. United is hoping to have the deal finalized and announcement by July 10 when the MLS’ secondary transfer window opens. As well as have a main attractive piece for the July 14 opening of the club’s new stadium Audi Field in Southeast Washington, D.C.
Rooney’s agent, Paul Stretford, toured Audi Field a few weeks ago with United owner Jason Levien and met with the club’s technical staff, according to Goff.
Rooney, 32, returned to his boyhood club Everton last summer after decorative career with Manchester United. With Manchester United, Rooney became the club’s all-time goalscorer and the only player in the Premier League to have at least 200 goals and 100 assists.
Rooney’s tenure with Everton has turned soured. Through the first half of the season, Rooney scored 10 goals and added two assists. However, in the last 15 games he has gone without a goal or assists.

For D.C. United they get a draw, and a international football figure that will add eyes to American soccer and the nation capital’s club. With a new stadium that cost upwards of $195 million, filling seats and gaining marketing points will be welcomed.
For MLS, D.C. United, and American soccer fans, all can wait with anticipation in hopes Rooney to D.C. is officially finalized.
