If the Washington Redskins are to win the Super Bowl in the near future, you can count in rookie running back Derrius Guice to be one of the players that would voluntarily visit the White House and President Donald Trump. The second-round draft pick explained why in an interview at LAX with TMZ Sports.
“I mean he’s running this country. Whatchu want me to do, hate a guy who’s running this country? I stay in my lane, he stay in his.”
When asked if he would accept an invite to visit the White House if Washington wins the Super Bowl, Guice explained why he would.
“If I get the chance, yeah. That’s the chance of a lifetime,” Guice said … “They got a lot of history in that White House.”
Controversy has surrounded teams and athletes accepting invitations to the White House more recently than ever before, especially with the tension between President Trump and the NFL over players protesting the Star-Spangled Banner.
The Philadelphia Eagles, who won Super Bowl LII in February, were formally invited to visit the White House. Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and defensive end Chris Long along with Torrey Smith have already stated they will not attend the team’s visit. Last season Tom Brady and other New England Patriots did not attend following their Super Bowl win. After reports surfaced that several players of the Golden State Warriors said they would not visit the White House following their 2017 NBA Finals win, the White House withdrew their invitation.
Guice, who is expected to strengthen the Redskins backfield, won’t be among the players who will skip out on a chance to visit the White House. The Redskins enter the 2018 season with a new look offense, that includes Guice, quarterback Alex Smith and wide receiver Paul Richardson as key additions. While the Super Bowl seems a long shot for this upcoming season, Guice and the Redskins hope they’ll earn the right to be invited in the near future.
