The Maryland Terrapins won’t forget Jordan McNair, not for a long time if ever. After a summer that was full of turmoil stemming from the 19-year old McNair collapsing during a May workout and ultimately passing away two weeks later in a hospital, the Terrapins were looking to get the 2018 season underway.
Before they could against No. 23 Texas, Maryland honored their fallen student-athlete. Before the first snap of the game, the Terrapins lined up with 10 men, leaving the right guard position, the same position McNair would play open. Maryland let the play clock run and in a classy gesture, Texas declined the five-yard delay of game penalty.

The 10-men salute to McNair culminated a series of honoring gestures on Saturday.
Before kickoff, Maryland showcased the locker dedicated to McNair. His locker will remain for the next three seasons, the length of collegiate eligibility he had.

The team also will wear a “79” decal on their helmets. Offensive guard and former McNamara high school teammate Ellis McKennie leading the way carrying a flair with McNair’s No. 79 onto the field along with a moment of silence. The captains also carried out McNair’s jersey during the coin toss.
As the fallout from his death and the circumstance surrounding it continue with Maryland, including head coach D.J. Durkin remaining on administrative leave, the Terrapins have stepped forward with the intent of honoring McNair along the way.
