The Washington Redskins are moving on from inside linebacker Martrell Spaight, according to John Keim of ESPN.
Spaight was a fifth-round pick of the Redskins in the 2015 draft out of Arkansas. He spent most of his time as a backup after his rookie season was cut short due to a concussion. Last season, he started six games after a string of injuries at the inside linebacker position. He recorded 41 tackles and forced one fumble.
However, with Mason Foster and Zach Brown returning healthy and the Redskins drafting Shaun Dion Hamilton in the sixth round of this year’s draft, Spaight’s spot on the roster was no longer a guarantee.
Hamilton showed flashes of potential against the run, hitting gaps, filling gaps and pass coverage. As he continues to get healthy from a fractured kneecap he suffered last year while at Alabama, his upside is greater than Spaight’s at the time being at Mike linebacker.
Spaight’s time with the Redskins comes to an end after three seasons. He had 54 tackles,Ā three passes defensed and one interception in 30 games.
