As an independent investigation to the death of Jordan McNair concluded on Friday, Maryland football head coach D.J. Durkin will remain on administrative leave.
The findings of the investigation state Maryland is culpable in the death of McNair, however, a decision on Durkin’s future with the school will remain undecided until the conclusion of a second external investigation that was launched after allegations of a “toxic culture” detailing inappropriate and demeaning behavior from the coaching staff.
No personnel decisions at Maryland will be made by the board until after the second external investigation — the one that will look into the program's culture — is complete.

In Friday’s findings surrounding the handling of McNair’s death, Durkin was on the scene when McNair fell ill. It’s unclear if Durkin had any role in the events following McNair’s collapse. A family attorney for McNair says that the 19-year died of a heat stroke two weeks after he was hospitalized.
Durkin was placed on administrative leave on Aug. 11 after an ESPN report detailed the toxic allegations in lieu of McNair’s death. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada was named interim coach in Durkin’s absence.
Maryland won its first two games, beating Texas 34-29 and Bowling Green 45-14 before losing last week to Temple 35-14.
Last month, McNair’s father, Martin, told Good Morning America Durkin “shouldn’t be able to work with anybody else’s kid.”
