Usually early season byes are frowned upon. The Washington Redskins are coming off a huge upset win over the Green Bay Packers. They’ve truly found their identity and having a bye could stomp that momentum. However, news comes that the early bye will give Redskins left tackle, and best offensive player, Trent Williams time to get a clean-up with his bothersome knee he had off-season surgery on.
Williams will undergo what is being described as a “minor” procedure on Monday, according to Erin Hawksworth of ABC 7.

Williams did have a visible hiccup late in Week 2’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts. There was nothing visible during the Redskins’ 31-17 win over the Packers. But, there is some discomfort enough to have the procedure.
Williams is expected to be ready to play in the Redskins’ next game Week 5 at New Orleans on Oct. 8 on Monday Night Football.
Williams has been the anchor of the Redskins offensive line. One of the best left tackles in the National Football League. Last season, he gutted out 10 games before the Redskins shut him down to undergo the initial surgery. Williams fought to get back for the 2018 season.
Williams entered Sunday’s game as the 12th-rated offensive tackle in the league by Pro Football Focus, which is clearly not up to his normal standards. Getting the knee cleaned up will be beneficial for the Redskins even if he is unavailable for Week 5 against the Saints.
Long-term is the key and having a minor procedure to get arguably the best left tackle right enough to continue being the perennial Pro Bowler that Trent Williams is accustoming to being, then so be it. An early bye usually is frowned upon, but it’s perfect timing for Williams.
