Bryce Harper’s time with the Washington Nationals may well be over. On Sunday, the Nationals closed their disappointing 2018 season with a 12-0 loss to the Colorado Rockies. The anticlimactic finish to the season also may be Harper’s final game with the Nats.
In his final at-bat Harper lined a double down the right field line. Harper, who had a double earlier in the game, finished the season with 34 doubles to go with his 34 home runs and his No. 34 jersey. Fitting, right?
Harper is set for free agency this winter if the Nats and he do not come to an agreement beforehand. His reported asking price of at least $400 million may be too steep for the Nationals to cough up. Additionally, the club has prepared well through drafting with two highly-touted potential replacements in their top two prospects Juan Soto and Victor Robles.Ā Harper’s talent equals the market value that he is seeking, but it may be wrong timing for the Nationals.
Knowing the end could be near, the Nationals and its fans gave Harper a proper send off in his potential final home series earlier this week. On Sunday, Harper capped a solid series at the plate against Colorado, collecting a pair of doubles and two hits in each of the three games.
