Alex Smith is officially out for the season with a broken fibula and tibia. The Redskins quarterback was taken to hospital for immediate surgery according to head coach Jay Gruden.

Smith was injured midway through the third quarter against the Houston Texans, as the quarterback’s leg was bent as he was being sacked.

Immediately it was clear the severity of his injury. Trainers stabilized the leg as an air cast was placed.

Smith was having an up and down season in his first year with the Redskins. Sunday against the Texans, he completed 12 of 27 passes for 135 yards and two first half interceptions, including a pick-six from the end zone.

Colt McCoy will replace Smith as the starting quarterback and Gruden alluded to the team possibly trying out 4 to 5 quarterbacks Monday as they prepare on a short week for the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving.

The Redskins will certainly need to regroup after such a devastating injury. Even though he struggled at times, having the starting quarterback’s season end due to an injury can be demoralizing, especially for one that the team has invested heavily into like Smith.

Smith was acquired by the Redskins in an offseason trade from the Kansas City Chiefs. He signed a four-year extension worth $94 million with $71 million in guarantees that does not go into effect until next season.

Smith finishes the season completing 62.5 percent of his passes for 2,180 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.
