The Washington Redskins are signing Mark Sanchez to serve as their backup quarterback, as the team prepares for their Thanksgiving showdown with the Dallas Cowboys, according to Field Yates of ESPN.
The Redskins were forced to sign a quarterback ahead of Week 12 after Alex Smith suffered a gruesome season-ending injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Houston Texans. Smith underwent successful surgery to repair his broken fibula and tibia.
The Redskins contacted five quarterbacks shortly following Smith’s injury. T.J. Yates, Kellen Clemens, EJ Manuel, and Josh Johnson joined Sanchez at Redskins Park Monday looking for an opportunity to be signed.
Colt McCoy, who has been with the Redskins since 2014 will serve as the starting quarterback in place of Smith. The Redskins have confidence they can continue to contend for the postseason with McCoy.
But the Redskins have full confidence in McCoy as their starter and believe they can still contend with him under center.

Sanchez was out the league will serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy. He spent 2017 with the Chicago Bears, making the team as their third quarterback, but he did not play any snaps. He last played in a game in 2016 for the Cowboys, appearing in two games. He was 10-of-18 with two interceptions.
The Redskins will become the third NFC East team Sanchez has suited up for. Additionally he spent two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2014-15.
