The Maryland Terrapins head coach search will focus on three prominent names. According to a report from the Washington Post, Alabama offensive coordinator Mike Locksley, Maryland’s interim coach Matt Canada, and Michigan quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton are finalists in Maryland’s quest to find a new head coach.
DJ Durkin was fired by the school after he was shortly reinstated from administrative leave following two separate investigations stemming from the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair in June and an August report suggesting a “toxic” culture within Maryland’s football program.
Locksley served as Maryland’s offensive coordinator from 2012-15 and was the program’s interim coach in 2015 following the firing of then-head coach Randy Edsall. Locksley also was Maryland’s running backs coach from 1997 until 2002. He is a Washington, D.C. native and has been instrumental in the past of recruiting, especially in the DMV area.
Locksley has previous head coaching experience, compiling a 2-26 record in three seasons at New Mexico.

Canada was hired in 2018 to be Maryland’s offensive coordinator after he served the same position at LSU. However, he served as the interim coach following Durkin’s administrative leave and his eventual firing. Under Canada, the team went 5-7 and nearly pulled off a huge upset of Ohio State before falling 52-51 in overtime.
Hamilton has been on Michigan’s coaching staff for the past two seasons. He also has an extensive NFL coaching experience culminating in him being an offensive coordinator from 2013-15 with the Indianapolis Colts and 2016 with the Cleveland Browns.
Hamilton also has Washington, DC area connects, attending and playing his collegiate football career at Howard. He also became the Bison’s quarterbacks coach in 1997 and offensive coordinator in 1999 before leaving in 2001.
According to Adam Rittensberg of ESPN, Maryland could make an announcement an official hire in the middle of next week, following interviews Sunday and Monday.
