Colt McCoy as the Washington Redskins’ starting quarterback in 2018 lasted a mere five quarters, as he suffered a fractured right fibula in the second quarter of Monday’s NFC East clash against the Philadelphia Eagles. ESPN first reported the results of X-rays revealed the season-ending injury.

McCoy appeared to be injured after he evaded a sack and then took a knee into the leg as he slid on the ground. He initially remained in the game for the next two plays, completing a five-yard pass on 3rd-and-20 that was negated by an illegal block in the back by Trent Williams. McCoy then completed a 10-yard pass to Jamison Crowder against 3rd-and-30 to set up a 44-yard field goal by Dustin Hopkins.

McCoy was attended to by the training staff on the sideline and later taken into the locker for further evaluation which revealed the fracture.
McCoy became the Redskins’ starting quarterback after Alex Smith suffered a gruesome compound fracture on a sack in a Nov. 18 game against the Houston Texans. Smith suffered a broken fibula and tibia on the play and required emergency surgery.
McCoy started Thanksgiving against the Dallas Cowboys, throwing for 268 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions in a 31-23 loss.Ā Against Philadelphia, he completed all four of his passes for 50 yards before he exited the game.
McCoy signed a two-year deal worth $6.5 million during the off-season. His contract had performance incentives that would have allowed him to void the second year of the deal. With Smith’s broken leg, McCoy had a great opportunity to met the performance-based requirements. Unfortunately, he will be unable to with his own broken leg.
Mark Sanchez replaced McCoy after the injury. Sanchez was signed by the Redskins to back up McCoy on Nov. 19 after Smith went down. Now, the Redskins will be in search for a back up or someone to compete with Sanchez moving forward down the season.
