There has been a strange silence on the updating health of injured Redskins quarterback Alex Smith. Smith suffered a compound fracture on a sack in a Week 11 loss to the Houston Texans, breaking his fibula and tibia that required emergency surgery.
Initially, the diagnosis was that he would be out six-to-eight months and the Redskins were expecting him to make a full recovery. However, the latest news is troubling to say the least and could hinder Smith’s recovery.
According to Redskins’ insider Burgundy Blog, Smith is indeed still in the hospital with post-op infection and likely will require “partial reconstruction” on his injured leg.

A previous Adam Schefter report detailed Smith’s return to football was not certain, but details did not illustrate the troubling conditions as Burgundy Blog has.
Eric Bickel of the Sports Junkies of 106.7 the Fan added more disheartening details that following Smith’s initial Nov. 18 surgery, he has endured “devastating complications” with an infection. With multiple surgery required to try to combat the infection, chances of him playing again are in “real jeopardy.”

Smith, 34, was acquired by the Redskins in a January trade with the Kansas City Chiefs for cornerback Kendall Fuller and a 2018 third-round draft pick. He signed an four-year extension with a guarantee of $71 million following the trade.
Washington was looking for Smith to be their long-term answer after the team could not work out an extension with Kirk Cousins, who ultimately signed with the Minnesota Vikings, after the Redskins acquired Smith. Now, that long-term forecast is in jeopardy.
