More details are being revealed surrounding Alex Smith’s recovery following his broken fibula and tibia injury he suffered last month following reports that Smith is dealing battling an infection after surgery to repair his compound fracture. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, Smith underwent several procedures, including removing tissue to clear the infection he had following the initial Nov. 18 surgery.

According to the report, Smith still is approaching the serious situation with optimism towards playing football again. However, Diana Russini of ESPN reports that sources have informed her that Smith’s injury is indeed career-threatening.

There is no doubt Smith faced an uphill battle when the injury occurred as he was sacked in the third quarter of a Week 11 game against the Houston Texans. As reports have surfaced throughout the day spearheaded initially by the Burgundy Blog, the Washington Redskins have stepped in the forefront by releasing a statement asking for privacy on the behalf of Smith and his family.
