The Washington Redskins waived running back Kapri Bibbs Saturday. And just as he hit the waiver wire, he was claimed Monday by the Green Bay Packers.
The Redskins had hoped to sign Bibbs back to the practice squad, per JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.
However, the odds of him not being claimed was slim. While used sparingly, Bibbs scored four touchdowns in 10 games for the Redskins this season, rushing for 101 yards and on 20 carries and catching 13 passes for 102 yards. Only Adrian Peterson has more touchdowns for the Redskins with eight.
The Packers had a need at running back with starter Aaron Jones suffering a sprained MCL Sunday against the Chicago Bears. It remains to be seen how much Bibbs will see the field over the last two games of the season, however, he has promise at the right age of 25.
Bibbs was signed to the Redskins practice squad last season but after a string of injuries at running back, he was activated to the 53-man roster. He quickly became a dependable option in pass protection and receiving out of the backfield.
Bibbs entered training camp on the Redskins roster among a crowded backfield. Injuries to rookie Derrius Guice, Byron Marshall, Samaje Perine in the preseason, and Chris Thompson still recovering from a broken fibula from last season allowed Bibbs to work his way into the equation with Washington.
Initially cut in the final roster cuts before the start of the season, Bibbs was signed to the practice squad. He was later activated ahead of Week 3 as the Redskins’ third running back. He eventually became the No. 2 back on the depth chart as Thompson dealt with a rib injury initially suffered in Week 5.
With Thompson returning in Week 14 and Marshall healthy, Bibbs became surprisingly expendable. He becomes the second young talent to be swept out of Redskins Park in the past week. Friday, undrafted rookie wide receiver Simmie Cobbs Jr. was signed from the Redskins’ practice squad by the New Orleans Saints, drawing the ire of analysts, fans, and players.
