The Washington Redskins placed cornerback Joshua Hosley on injured reserve Tuesday. The Redskins currently have 19 players on injured reserve, tied with the Oakland Raiders for most in the NFL.
Hosley started the season on the non-football injury list with a foot injury after a table landed on him before training camp. He was activated off the NFI list but released and signed to the practice squad. He was activated to the 53-man roster for Sunday’s 16-13 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, however, he suffered a partial torn ACL.
While Hosley’s contributions were minimal, his misfortunes highlights a season in which the Redskins have struggled with injuries.
The growing list of injuries have included starting quarterback Alex Smith, wide receivers Paul Richardson, rookies Trey Quinn and Cam Sims, and offensive guards Brandon Scherff, Shawn Lauavo, and Jonathan Cooper. Along with Hosley, one of the early injuries was rookie running back Derrius Guice, who was expected to be the featured back before suffering a torn ACL in the first preseason game.
That number doesn’t include running back Byron Marshall who was activated from the injured reserve on Nov. 17 from a knee injury.
[table id=15 /]The Redskins jumped out to a 6-3 record and sat in first-place of the NFC East despite the injuries were already piling up including Lauvao and Scherff. However, the team has struggled to overcome the lost of Smith, their quarterback.
Washington lost four straight, including the Week 11 game in which Smith suffered a compound fracture in his leg, breaking his fibula and tibia. In that four-game span, the Redskins also lost backup quarterback Colt McCoy to a broken fibula that puts his season in jeopardy, but he has not been placed on IR, as he could return in time for the regular season finale against Philadelphia.
Injuries are part of the game, yet the Redskins have dealt with a greater share than other teams in the league.
