DJ Swearinger is no longer part of the Washington Redskins. The talented safety was notified he was being released by the team by head coach Jay Gruden Monday morning.
Swearinger’s release stems from his post-game criticism of defensive coordinator Greg Manusky Saturday following the Redskins’ 25-16 loss to the Tennessee Titans. Both he and Gruden acknowledged he had been talked to about his previous post-game comments against Manusky and the coaching staff. Saturday’s comments appeared to be the final straw.
Swearinger posted a touching farewell post on Instagram thanking Redskins fans and now former teammates.
“#Redskinsnation, it was truly a blessing! I appreciate all the support,” Swearinger wrote.
In a text message to the Washington Post, Gruden said releasing Swearinger was “best for both parties.”
Swearinger led the Redskins with four interceptions and was named a Pro Bowl alternate last week.
