Reports on Thursday morning suggested Alabama co-offensive coordinator Josh Gattis was heading to Maryland to join Mike Locksley’s staff. Then hours later, the headlines changed. Gattis was not coming to Maryland after all, spurning Locksley and the Terrapins for Michigan.

It was a wild sequence as Twitter exploded. How did this happen? Well according to Jeff Ermann of InsideMDSports, Gattis indeed accepted Maryland’s offer. Then without signing, shopped the offer around. Michigan and head coach Jim Harbaugh jumped on it.

Michigan is paying Gattis over $1 million per year according to Ermann.

Gattis’ decision now leaves Maryland still searching to complete Locksley’s coaching staff just as the Terps’ recruiting period opens Friday without neither an offensive coordinator nor a defensive coordinator in tow.

Maryland has just six recruits signed from the 2019 class. As Locksley has taken over the reins in College Park, there is a lot of work to do just for his first season.
