The moment news broke of Jalen Hurts had entered the NCAA transfer protocol, anticipation began to swirl about the possibility of him coming to Maryland following his former offensive coordinator at Alabama Mike Locksley. That anticipation is only going to grow larger as the former Alabama quarterback is visiting the College Park campus this weekend, according to Jeff Ermann of InsideMDSports.
According to the report, Hurts will be in attendance in Friday’s game between the Terrapins men’s basketball team against Indiana at the XFINITY Center.
Hurts led the Crimson Tide to back-to-back National Championship Game appearances as a freshman and sophomore in 2016 and 2017. He was benched in the second half of the National Championship Game following the 2017 season against Georgia. Then-freshman sensation Tua Tagovalioa rallied Alabama to the win and national title and the rest is history, per say.
With Alabama now fully Tagovailoa’s, Hurts is set to find a new home as a grad transfer. The logical choice is Maryland as Locksley was hired last month to be the Terrapins’ head coach.
Maryland currently has one experienced quarterback set to return in time for spring in Tyrrell Pigrome as last year’s primary starter Kasim Hill suffered his second torn ACL of his collegiate career in November. If he chooses Maryland, it’s expected Hurts will be the starting quarterback for the 2019 season.
Miami, Oklahoma, and TCU appear to be the Terps’ biggest challenge in landing Hurts, according to Ermann.
