Gregg Williams to the New York Jets isn’t official just yet, and the Washington Redskins are trying to secure a meeting with the defensive guru for their defensive coordinator opening, according to JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.

Williams appeared all but set to join newly hired head coach Adam Gase in New York, however, the Redskins had been hoping to secure a meeting. That meeting, if possible, would be Tuesday.

The Redskins have sort of quietly been fiddling around with defensive coordinator candidates all while current defensive coordinator Greg Manusky remains employed with the team.

Last week, it was reported they met with Todd Bowles before he took the defensive coordinator position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Redskins had conversations with Steve Wilks before he took the coordinator position with the Cleveland Browns.

It’s anyone’s guess as to what’s going on in Washington. It appears they are trying to gauge interest of some of the top candidates for the defensive coordinator while possibly keeping Manusky as insurance just in case no one budges on the opportunity. With all that’s transpired in the Redskins’ front office, this only strengthens the narrative that not many in football want to deal with the Bruce Allen, Jay Gruden regime.

According to a report last week, current Redskins assistants Bill Callahan (offensive line coach) and Jim Tomusla (defensive line coach) may want out of Redskins Park. Whether it’s defensive coordinator or the entire coaching staff it’s a wait-and-see to how it shapes out.
