Former Virginia Tech quarterback Josh Jackson announced on Monday evening that he will be transferring to Maryland.
Jackson will finish his degree at Virginia Tech this spring, and then transfer to Maryland, making him eligible to play for the Terrapins immediately.
Jackson gives new head coach Mike Locksley an experienced quarterback who can throw from the pocket. Maryland had missed out on former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts, who opted to transfer to Oklahoma over the Terrapins despite his established relationship with Locksley.
Last season’s primary starter for Maryland Kasim Hill is expected to miss the entire 2019 season after suffering his second torn ACL in November. Hill has since entered the transfer portal.
Tyrrell Pigrome, who is more of an dual-threat quarterback, is expected to be Jackson’s biggest competition heading for the starting role next season.
Jackson threw for 2,991 yards and 20 touchdowns against nine interceptions as a redshirt freshman at Virginia Tech in 2017. He also led the team with six rushing touchdowns.
Last season, Jackson suffered a broken fibula in the third game of the season against Old Dominion. He finished the season with five touchdowns and one interception.
Jackson would be joining the freshman duo of wide receive Jeshaun Jones and running back Anthony McFarland among others.
Jackson will also join former Virginia Tech teammate, wide receiver Sean Savoy, who transferred to Maryland as well.
