The Washington Redskins are confident in going with Colt McCoy as their starting quarterback for the 2019 season, as Alex Smith is expected to miss significant time, including the entire 2019 season, with his leg injury. But, the option of drafting a quarterback is still there for Washington.
The Redskins have the No. 15 pick in the first round of next month’s NFL Draft, and senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams won’t rule out selecting a quarterback with the pick. In fact, the Redskins intend to talk to all the top quarterbacks available at NFL Scouting Combine, including Heisman winner Kyler Murray.
Team president Bruce Allen confirmed that the Redskins met with Murray when talking to reporters Friday.
Washington is under hostage with their salary cap as Smith currently accounts for a $20.4 million cap hit for next season. Their options for a replacement is limited with the salary cap. That’s a huge reason McCoy will head into training camp as the starter. Picking up competition or looking for a long-term solution moving forward is enticing.
There’s a lot of attention focused on Murray with winning the Heisman and following in the footsteps at Oklahoma as last year’s No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield. Murray is currently the No. 2 rated quarterback for the draft, according to Matt Miller of Bleacher Report.
Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State is No. 1. Drew Lock of Missouri is third and Duke’s Daniel Jones is fourth. All four are regarded as potential first-round picks.
