Maryland post player Bruno Fernando will declare for the NBA Draft and intends to hire an agent. Fernando’s decision was announced by the school Monday.

“It has long been my dream to play basketball at its highest level in the NBA,” Fernando said in the statement. “With that being said, I am taking the pre-draft process extremely seriously. I want to ensure that I make an informed decision that will set the foundation for sustained success and prosperity throughout my playing career and beyond.”

Fernando averaged 13.6 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.9 blocks in 34 games as a sophomore this past season — all increases from his freshman campaign. He also shot 60.7 percent from the field and 77.9 percent from the free throw line — both increases from his first year at Maryland as well.

He declared for the draft last year but opted to return for a second season at College Park. It’s a decision that may pay off. He was named to the first team All-Big Ten and the Big Ten’s All-Defensive Team in 2018-19.

Fernando is currently ranked 34th overall among 2019 NBA Draft prospects by ESPN. He ranked 32nd by CBS Sports.

Maryland guard Anthony Cowan also will declare for the NBA Draft.

As a junior Cowan averaged 15.6 points, 4.4 assists, 0.9 steals in 34 games this past season. His shooting dropped below 40 percent in 2018-19, shooting 39.3 percent from the field and 33.7 percent from three.

“My last three seasons at Maryland have been a true blessing and I have grown so much as a player and person,” Cowan Jr. said in the school’s statement. “As I enter my final year of eligibility, I feel it’s important to receive an evaluation of my game from professional teams to best prepare myself for life after college.”

Both Cowan and Fernando have until May 29 to withdraw from the NBA Draft.

Under newly adopted NCAA rules, college players are allowed to hire an agent during the evaluation process. If the player chooses to withdraw from the draft and return to school, the player must end the relationship with the agent to keep their eligibility.
