It appears that Dwayne Haskins will wear the No. 7 as he starts his NFL career with the Washington Redskins. Redskins great Joe Theismann told 106.7 the Fan he has given the first-round pick his blessing to wear the number.
“I just got off the phone with Dwayne just a little while ago, and I told him it was okay to wear No. 7,” Theismann said while appearing on Grant & Danny Wednesday. “Given him permission. Not that I feel like I needed to, but he was respectful enough to ask.”
Haskins has worn the number going back to his days while at Bullis High School in Potomac, Md before he dawn the same number while at Ohio State. Theismann wore the number while with the Redskins from 1974-1985 before his career was ended by a broken leg.
The Redskins had not reissued the number since Theismann retired. In large due to what he meant to the organization, guiding them to their first of three Super Bowl title wins and winning NFL MVP in 1983.
However, the Redskins do not officially retire jerseys. Never before has a player with so much promise as Haskins has presented the situation. Theismann stressed Haskins didn’t need his permission, but he was respectful enough to ask for it.
Theismann had stated earlier this week that he wanted to talk to Haskins before granting his blessing. He added he wanted to resolve the matter so it can be one less thing for Haskins to worry about moving forward to be successful for the Redskins.
“If this is one less thing that puts any problems out there or issues out there for him or statements or comments,” Theismann said. “Let’s make his life as easy possible, so that we can get the success from him that we’re hoping and expecting.”
