The Washington Nationals are up against the clock, as they seek a long-term deal with third baseman Anthony Rendon. While appearing on 106.7 the Fan, general manager Mike Rizzo reassured the club’s focus is re-signing Rendon to a long-term deal.

“We’re aggressively trying to sign Anthony Rendon,” Rizzo said on 106.7 The Fan. “We’d love to have him here as a National long term.”

Rendon, 28, is set to become a free agent at the end of this season.

He is hitting .333/.428/.691 with nine home runs and 27 RBIs in 34 games this season.

Rendon is reportedly looking for a deal in line with Houston Astros star Jose Altuve, who signed a seven-year deal worth $163.5 million in 2018.

The Nationals lost out on Bryce Harper, who left the club that drafted him in 2010 to sign with NL East rival, the Philadelphia Phillies. Losing out on another cornerstone player could be crumbling for the Nationals. Like Harper, Rendon is represented by agent Scott Boras.

They currently have taken a backseat in the NL East with a disappointing 19-29 start that leaves them nine games back of the Phillies for first-place in the division.
