Patrick Corbin and Tyler Skaggs are close friends after both started their MLB journey in 2009 as part of the Los Angeles Angels organization. The two were even traded together in 2010 to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Monday, the Angels announced Skaggs had passed away, as he was found unresponsive in a Southlakes, Texas hotel as the Angels were visiting the Texas Rangers. Skaggs’ death came just 12 days shy of his 28th birthday.

Coincidentally, Tuesday was Corbin’s turn in the rotation. Now with the Washington Nationals, Corbin did his best to honor his late friend.

When Corbin took the mound Tuesday against the Miami Marlins, he led the Nationals out on the field, wearing the No. 45 — Skaggs’ jersey number with the Angels.

Corbin then drew the No. 45 into the mound with his finger, in a heartfelt tribute.

The Angels and Rangers also honored Skaggs with a moment of silence, as well as having the No. 45 painted on the mound at Globe Life Park.

Corbin, who wanted to pitch, fought through the emotions as well as a rain delay pitching seven inning while allowing one run, six hits, striking out seven, and no walks.

He also struck out the side in the seventh inning on nine pitches.

Certainly for Corbin that was one of the best possible ways to honor his friend in the wake of his sudden passing.
