Ryan Zimmerman exited Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Braves. The Washington Nationals third baseman grimaced after running down the first base line to beat out a throw from Josh Donaldson for an infield single.
Zimmerman is now set to undergo an MRI Monday on his right foot after the team returns to Washington, DC.
Zimmerman said he had been feeling “really good” for the past three or four days but felt the pain associated to his plantar fascitis that forced him to miss two months earlier this season.
If Zimmerman is to miss another round of extended time, Washington has depth in place in his absence. Howie Kendrick and Matt Adams have manned the first base position, and Washington would be expected to continue to platoon the two.
Kendrick, who has played 22 of his 79 games at first, is hitting .318/.370/.541 with 12 home runs and 48 RBIs in 246 plate appearances. Meanwhile, Adams who has played 48 of his 71 games at first, is hitting .232/.269/.511 with 15 home runs and 40 RBIs in 201 plate appearances.
The Nationals also have the young prospect of Jake Noll to add to the platoon at first, if Ryan Zimmerman is to miss any time.
