The Washington Redskins have released inside linebacker Mason Foster, according to Erin Hawksworth of 106.7 the Fan.
The decision comes just two days before the Redskins are set to begin their training camp in nearby Richmond, Virginia.
By releasing Foster, the Redskins will save $4 million against the salary cap.
Foster’s future with the Redskins became questionable as his production tailored off towards the end of the 2018 season. Still, the veteran had a career-high 131 tackles, two interceptions, four pass defenses and two fumble recoveries.
With the emergence of Shaun Dion Hamilton and the team claiming Reuben Foster off waivers last November, Foster appeared then to been on borrowed time.
Then there was the incident with the fans that led to a tirade against the fans and the team. After briefly blaming his cousin for the incident, he apologized to the team and the fans.
In March, the team began shopping both Foster and fellow inside linebacker Zach Brown to teams for a potential trade. Brown was later released, but Foster remained on the team.
The Redskins signed linebacker Jon Bostic after Reuben Foster suffered a torn ACL in May’s OTAs. Now, with Mason Foster reportedly being released, it appears Bostic has the inside track on starting at the Mike position next to the second-year pro Hamilton.
