Despite being first on the quarterback depth chart, Colt McCoy will not play in the Washington Redskins’ preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns Thursday, according to Craig Hoffman of 106.7 the Fan.

McCoy is still recovering a broken fibula he suffered in December that required three surgical procedures and prevented him from off-season activities before training camp.

McCoy has practiced for the most part throughout training camp, although head coach Jay Gruden previously stated they will limit his consecutive days of practicing.

Of course, McCoy is battling for the Redskins’ starting quarterback position along with Case Keenum, who the team acquired in a trade from Denver this off-season, and first-round pick Dwayne Haskins.

Gruden hinted in a clever way of possibly one of his quarterbacks not playing, as emphasized that “three” of the team’s four quarterbacks against Cleveland.

Keenum and Haskins may have an increase in snaps during the game with McCoy out. It also means that fourth-string quarterback Josh Woodrum will likely finish the game after Keenum, who is likely to start, and Haskins.
