Maryland has turned back the clock in recent years with their helmets and uniforms for their homecoming games. This year’s version will turn back the clock to the 1980’s “Terps” script helmets and the classic red and white uniforms for Nov. 2 against Michigan. The school announced Tuesday.
The classic look was worn by quarterbacks Boomer Esiason and Frank Reich during the Buddy Ross era that saw four straight bowl seasons from 1982-1985 — something Maryland has not done since.
“I was raised on the Terps script,” Maryland head coach Mike Locksley said in a team press release. “I fell in love with the teams that donned those uniforms. I remember watching guys like Boomer and Frank Reich guiding the Terps in those uniforms. I know our team will be excited to bring that back for homecoming.”
Michigan is pegged as a College Football Playoff contender, so winning in these classic threads may be daunting for Maryland. However, judging by the responses on Maryland Football’s Twitter, fans are clamoring for these uniforms to be added to their uniform slate permanently. It’s hard to argue the notion.
