The Redskins without Trent Williams is a strong possibility. The cornerstone left tackle continues his holdout from the team, as the preseason approaches Week 2. While Williams reportedly does not intend to return to the team, seeking a trade or release, the Redskins to this point are not willing to move on from him.

And thus there is a standoff. Neither side appears to be budging, and it’s unclear if the two sides are in contact trying to resolve matters. The Redskins want him back even with the rumors circling that Williams does not want to come back.

Training camp is over, and the team is inching to preparation for the season with a glaring hole at left tackle. Redskins offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell took his plea publicly, asking for Williams to return.

“There’s no doubt if, Trent, you’re out there and you’re listening, man, we’d love to have you back as soon as possible,” O’Connell told 106.7 The Fan’s Craig Hoffman.

The Redskins have 2018 third-round pick Geron Christian and 36-year veteran Donald Penn vying for left tackle while Williams is absent. The two have had mixed results. Wednesday, running back Adrian Peterson admitted to the drop-off from Williams to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, saying the offense “has been a struggle” without Williams.

“There’s no denying that and every Redskin fan out there knows that he’s an elite player,” O’Connell continued to Hoffman. “Obviously, nobody wants him back more than me. I’m right up there with every other guy walking in the halls of this building right now, we want him back badly.”

O’Connell side he likes the depth Washington has on the left side of the line at both tackle and guard, but realistically there’s no option is as good as having Trent Williams.
