Washington Redskins slot wide receiver Trey Quinn will not play in Thursday’s preseason game at the Atlanta Falcons, head coach Jay Gruden announced to reporters on Tuesday.
Quinn injured his thumb during pregame warmups ahead of last week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Redskins have “high hopes” Quinn will be ready for their regular season opener at the Philadelphia Eagles.
Quinn has been virtually locked at the Redskins’ slot receiver position. He has been a pleasant surprise for Washington since the team drafted him in the seventh-round of the 2018 NFL Draft. However, his rookie season was cut short due to an ankle injury that had him on the injured reserve list twice.
Quinn had bounced back and had a great training camp before his injury. The former SMU product said if Thursday’s game was a regular season game he would be playing. He added that he would like to take reps in the fourth preseason game next week, per JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.
Quinn has one catch for eight yards this preseason.
The Redskins have been plagued with injuries across the board the past two seasons, and those injuries haven’t seemed to let up throughout training camp
Top wide receiver Paul Richardson, Jr. probably won’t play against the Falcons either. He is nursing a quad injury. He is also returning from knee and shoulder injuries that landed him on IR in 2018, as well. Richardson has yet to play this preseason.
Meanwhile, rookie wide receiver Terry McLaurin missed last week’s game against Cincinnati with a tailbone injury. He has played just one snap thus far in preseason. The situation in Washington is not ideal with three of their projected top receivers being limited this preseason with injuries.
