Patrick Corbin struck out eight batters to help lead the Washington Nationals to a 9-3 win over the Miami Marlins. He became the third Nationals pitcher to reach 200 strikeouts this season, joining Max Scherzer and NL-leading Stephen Strasburg. Corbin’s feat put the Nats in a rare modern company.
Washington’s trio becomes the first team National League team in 50 years to have three pitchers with at least 200 strikeouts in the same season.
The last team was the 1969 Houston Astros with Larry Dierker (232), DOn Wilson (235) and Tom Griffin (200).
This is the second consecutive season Corbin has reached 200 strikeouts. Scherzer reached the 200 strikeout mark earlier this week, becoming just the second pitcher in Major League Baseball history to have eight consecutive seasons with 200-plus strikeouts. Meanwhile, Strasburg leads the NL with 215 strikeouts.
Corbin signed a six-year deal worth $140 million this past winter, creating arguably the best trio of pitchers the Nationals have had since moving to Washington, DC. That’s saying a lot considering the starting pitchers that have pitched alongside Strasburg and Scherzer.
