The comeback season of Isaiah Thomas has taken a bit of a setback. The Washington Wizards guard is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks following surgery to repair a rupture of the radial collateral ligament in his left thumb, the team announced Wednesday.

The timetable of Thomas’ expected recovery will keep him out during training camp, and preseason, and he could miss the first two weeks of the regular season.

Thomas suffered the injury during a workout Monday.

“In the meantime, he will continue to mentor our young guards and have a positive impact on the team as we start training camp,” Sheppard added.

Thomas signed a one-year deal with the Wizards this past summer. Washington is expected to be without star point guard John Wall for the entire regular season as he recovers from a ruptured Achilles. The team also lost guard Tomas Satoransky in free agency to the Chicago Bulls.

The Wizards are counting on Thomas to be a top-2 point guard along with Ish Smith. His absence will push undrafted rookie Justin Robinson in line to win some playing time.

Thomas has been limited to 44 games in the past two seasons in large due to a hip injury that he suffered in the 2017 NBA Playoffs. In that time he has been on three teams, traded twice, spending time with the Cavaliers, Lakers, and most recently the Nuggets. This is after he had two All-Star appearances in two full seasons with the Boston Celtics.
