The WNBA Finals are headed to Connecticut with the series tied at 1-1, as the Sun toppled the Mystics 99-87 in DC for Game 2. Tuesday’s outcome is the least of the Mystics worries, as all eyes are now on the health of their star and WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne.
Delle Donne exited Game 2 in the first quarter with back spasms after three minutes. She was evaluated immediately but never return to the game.
Delle Donne will have an MRI Wednesday. Head coach Mike Thibault said she “didn’t look good,” according to Tom Hunsicker of WUSA-9.
He added Delle Donne went up for her first layup attempt and her back “grabbed on her” forcing her to immediately ask for a sub.
Her status for the remainder of the best-of-5 series is very much up in the air. This would be devastating news for Elena Delle Donne, who was not 100 percent for last year’s Finals after she suffered a hyperextend knee during the WNBA Semifinals.
Delle Donne led the Mystics in Game with 22 points and 10 rebounds for a Game 1 win. However, with her exiting Game 2, the Mystics struggled with their shot early on falling into a 29-17 deficit.
They were forced to play from behind, but a fury in the third quarter cut their deficit to 73-69. But, Sun forward Jonquel Jones was too much as she finished with 32 points and 18 rebounds. Alyssa Thomas added 21 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.
Emma Messeman had a team-high 23 points and eight rebounds for the Mystics.
The series now shifts with Connecticut having momentum and the Mystics hoping for their leader’s return.
