The Nationals may have figured out the magic combination. After starter Anibal Sanchez held the St. Louis Cardinals hitless for 7 2/3 innings in Game 1 of the NLCS. Teammate Max Scherzer followed in Game 2 with six innings hitless innings against the Cardinals before Paul Goldschmidt singled to lead off the seventh.
Sanchez and Scherzer hitless pitching was only the second time in MLB postseason history that teammates pitched at least five hitless innings in consecutive games during an League Championship Series.
The first to do the feat, Anibal Sanchez and Max Scherzer. That’s right the two did it during the 2013 ALCS while teammates with the Detroit Tigers in Games 1 and 2.
They are the only two pitching combos to ever do it, and they did it twice.
Unfortunately, the Nationals will hope that history won’t repeat itself. While Sanchez led the Tigers to a 1-0 win in Game 1, the Tigers lost Game 2 6-5 after they blew a 5-1 lead once Scherzer came out the game. And Detroit ultimately lost the series.
Washington won Game 1 Friday night 2-0 with Sanchez on the mound.
