The Redskins are placing tight end Jordan Reed on injured reserve, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Reed has been in the NFL’s concussion protocol since Aug. 22 when he was on the receiving end of a helmet-to-helmet hit by Falcons safety Keanu Neal. Neal was fined for the hit.

Reed has already been ruled out for Sunday’s game at the Miami Dolphins. He missed the previous five games. The move would be ideal for a player that has yet to be healthy enough to play in a game this season, and his return being uncertain.

Reed now has seven documented concussions since 2010. There has been rumors that he is considering retirement.

The latest news is unfortunate, as Reed had a strong training camp, healed from a toe injury that forced him to miss three games last season. The Redskins expected him to be an integral part in their passing game, but those plans were halted with the hit in their third preseason game.
