Juan Soto continues to impress a national audience. After hammering an opposite-field home run in the fourth, Soto was back at it in the fifth, clearing the bags with a two-run double off Gerrit Cole to extend the Washington Nationals’ lead over the Houston Astros to 5-2 in Game 1 of the World Series.
Adam Eaton got the scoring going as drove in Kurt Suzuki with a one-out RBI-single. Then Anthony Rendon hustled down the first base line to beat out a double-play. That set up Soto, who drilled a 3-1 change-up from Cole.
Soto in his first World Series game now is 2-for-3 with three runs batted. He becomes the third MLB player to have three RBIs in a World Series game before turning 21 years of age.
Meanwhile the Nationals have tagged Cole for five earned runs. It’s the first time since May 22 that the Astros’ ace has allowed four or more earned runs in a game.
