After yet another disappointing season under Bruce Allen, questions and rumors are swirling about the future of the Washington Redskins team president and the makeup of the front office. According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Redskins are considering hiring a new executive vice president of football operations. The move could spell the end of Allen’s tenure in Washington.

“I’ve actually heard the Redskins have kicked around the idea of hiring an Executive Vice President of Football Operations, someone in that sort of role, to oversee everything. I don’t know whether they’ll go through with it. Going through with it would mean probably firing Bruce Allen. But I’ve heard they’ve at least kicked it around.”

Allen is completing his 10th season with the Redskins. He has had various roles, but has always been ahead of football operations. With him in a general manager role, the Redskins are 45-82 with one playoff game. That does not include the two seasons Scot McCloughan served as the team’s GM in 2015-2016,

The Redskins have been influx for many years behind on and off the field drama under Allen. Allen has had his hand just about all decisions within the organization since his arrival in 2010.

Fans have grown tiresome of Allen’s regime that has prompted the hashtag #firebruceallen. There appears to be an increasing amount of empty seats in FedEx Field each week.

Yet, owner Dan Snyder has seemingly stayed loyal to Allen, taking a backseat publicly to Allen. This isn’t the first time rumors surrounded Allen’s removal from football operations.

This season the team avoided a complete rebuild, electing to add veteran players and keeping some that may have overstayed their welcome such as cornerback Josh Norman and tight ends Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis.

Then there is the situation with cornerstone left tackle Trent Williams. Despite him vowing not wanting to play with the team and his strained relationship with the team’s training staff and Allen, the Redskins opted not to trade the disgruntled Williams. A decision made by Allen. Williams didn’t play a down this season.

Despite holding out hope for the season behind, the team’s losing led to the firing of then head coach Jay Gruden. Along with a long list of injuries, the team ultimately was forced to play younger players at just about every key position. That included starting a rookie quarterback and three rookie wide receivers.

With the Redskins locked into a fourth-place finish in the NFC East, a complete rebuild is in order. Fans will be discouraged if Allen is at the helm of this offseason’s decisions. Maybe, Snyder sees the decreasing fan interest and the hears the chorus of fans and media yearning for a change and firing of Allen. We shall see.
