Tension was running high when Metro division rivals the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes skated against each other Friday.

A skirmish occurred between Capitals forward Nic Dowd and Hurricanes’ Andrei Svechinkov that concluded with Dowd tossing Svechinkov’s stick into the crowd near the end of the first period.

A kid in the stands wearing a Svechnikov jersey caught the stick. Reportedly, Svechnikov retrieved the stick. Given how great he has played this year it may be understandable.

Entering Friday’s game, Svechnikov had 38 points in 40 games this season.

Hopefully he blessed the fan with some other memento.

Meanwhile, the game misconduct limited Nic Dowd to 6:41 of ice time. Luckily, the Capitals managed without their fourth line center, beating the Hurricanes 4-3.
