Washington Redskins head coach Ron Rivera continues to add former Carolina Panthers assistants to his coaching staff. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Rivera has hired Steve Russ as the Redskins linebackers coach.
Russ spent four seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos between 1997 and 2000 as linebacker and mostly special teams. He was part the Broncos back-to-back Super Bowl winning teams during the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
After playing in the old XFL in its lone season, he began his coaching career in 2001 as the outside linebackers coach at Ohio University. He also coached at Syracuse, Wake Forest and Air Force in college.
He rose to defensive coordinator at Syracuse and again at Air Force, where he was also the assistant head coach.
He joined Rivera’s coaching staff in Carolina in 2018 as a linebackers coach.
Russ becomes the fourth former Panthers assistant hired by Rivera since he became Redskins head coach. Washington is reportedly hiring John Matsko as offensive line coach, Jim Hostler as wide receivers coach and Ryan Vermillion.
