Washington Redskins legend Doug Williams is staying with the franchise in a new front office role. The team announced Thursday, Williams will become the Senior Vice President of Player Development, moving away from the personnel side.
Williams will report directly to newly hired head coach Ron Rivera.
Williams talked to USA TODAY Sports’ Mike Jones about the announcement, saying he opted to stay with the Redskins to help development of players such as young quarterback Dwayne Haskins and running back Derrius Guice.
Williams played with the Redskins from 1986-89, guiding the franchise to a Super Bowl XXII win.
After a lengthy coaching career and executive resume, the Super Bowl XXII MVP joined the Redskins’ front office in 2014 as a personnel executive. He was promoted to Senior VP of Player Personnel in 2017.
Washington also has promoted Malcolm Blacken to Senior Director of Player Development.
“After meeting with Dan Snyder, Coach Rivera and Senior Director of Player Development Malcolm Blacken, we all came to an agreement on the vision that we have for the franchise going forward,” Doug Williams said in a statement. “I am looking forward to this new opportunity to work with Malcolm and I have always respected his work during my time with the franchise. We both look forward to working with and supporting Coach Rivera in making sure that our players are prepared for life on and off the field.”
