ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt is bringing his midnight “SportsCenter” show to DC.
After 25 years away from the DMV area, Van Pelt is headed back, bringing his anchor show along with him. The show is set to be produced from the same studio that produces “PTI.”
Van Pelt, a Maryland native and alum of the University of Maryland, also wants to incorporate a Go-Go version of the “SportsCenter” theme to solidify the move to DC.
“I’m reaching out to Trouble Funk,” Van Pelt told John Ourand of Sports Business Daily. “I’m trying to figure out how we can get a Go-Go version of the ‘SportsCenter’ theme. I want to have that in the bag of tricks. I want to be able to come back from commercial and have Go-Go music playing. That will say to anyone who understands that we’re back in the District.”
Go-Go has been the music of Washington, DC since it originated from the nation’s capital in the 1960s. The genre has been embraced by many of the city’s residents behind musical legends Chuck Brown, Trouble Funk, EU, and Rare Essence. The NBA’s Washington Wizards named their G-League affiliate after the city’s popular music, the Capital City Go-Go.
Van Pelt’s idea of getting Trouble Funk for a Go-Go version of the popular show’s theme would definitely be a stamp of the city. It will also introduce some of the audience to the musical essence of DC.
