DeMatha Catholic High School announced Monday that legendary basketball coach Morgan Wootten is receiving home hospice care.
Wootten is viewed as the greatest basketball coach ever. He coached the Stags for 46 seasons, winning 87% of his games with nearly 1,300 wins. He won five national championships and was voted No. 1 in the Washington, DC area 23 times.
Wootten began coaching at DeMatha in 1956, helping integrate the school three years later. During his lengthy time at DeMatha, Wootten turned down multiple offers for collegiate coaching jobs, including most notably Georgetown and NC State.
He retired in 2002, leaving behind an untouchable legacy. He was named National Coach of the Year four times. He was inducted in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000. He also served as chairman of the McDonald’s All-American Team selection committee.
