The basketball and sports world was rocked by the devastating tragedy that claimed Bryant’s life. Legions of fans have poured their heartfelt reaction following news that Bryant was killed in helicopter crash that also claimed the life of his daughter, Gianna, and seven others. Scores of tributes have followed throughout sports and Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin joined in to honor the fallen basketball legend.
Ovechkin dawned Bryant’s iconic No. 24 in a warmup jersey ahead of the Capitals’ game against the Nashville Predators, Wednesday.
Ovechkin has had a deep admiration for Bryant. He met Bryant on several occasions. Ovechkin expressed he was “heartbroken” by Bryant’s death.
The Capitals announced that Ovechkin will sign the No. 24 jersey and it will be auctioned to benefit the Kobe & Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation.
