The Kansas City Chiefs have been benefited immensely from a pair of former Washington Redskins’ cornerbacks this season. And the duo was on full display in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIV victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
Both Bashaud Breeland and Kendall Fuller snagged interceptions off 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Breeland got Garoppolo first, in the second quarter. Garoppolo was hit by the Chiefs’ pass rush just as he released the football. Breeland came back to the errant throw for the interception. The turnover would lead to a field that extended the Chiefs lead to 10-3.
As the game went on, the Chiefs fell behind 20-10 going into the fourth quarter. However, the defense got consecutive stops and Patrick Mahomes took charge, leading Kansas City to three consecutive touchdowns to surge to a 31-20 lead.
With the 49ers searching desperately for an answer late in the fourth quarter, Fuller leaped to snag an interception from intended target Deebo Samuel to seal the win.
Breeland finished the game with a team-high seven tackles, two tackles for losses, an interception and pass defensed.
Fuller finished with four tackles, two passed defensed and an interception.
Breeland was a fourth-round pick of the Redskins in 2014. After four seasons with Washington, the two parted ways and he signed with the Green Bay Packers in 2018 after a failed physical voided a contract agreement with the Carolina Panthers.
After one season in Green Bay, Breeland landed in Kansas City this season, starting in all but one game for the Chiefs.
Fuller was a third-round pick in 2016. After blossoming into arguably the best young slot corner in the NFL, Fuller was traded to the Chiefs in 2018 along with a third-round pick for quarterback Alex Smith.
Fuller missed five games with a thumb injury this season, but his return in Week 13 helped transform the Chiefs defense that helped Kansas City on their Super Bowl-winning run.
