On a night Alex Ovechkin was honored for joining the NHL’s 700 Club, the captain delivered the Washington Capitals from the hand’s of defeat Tuesday against the visiting Winnipeg Jets.
First, he deposited his 701st career NHL goal to give the Capitals an early 1-0 lead. Washington would build a 3-0 lead before the Jets stormed back and tied the game at 3-3 before sending the game into overtime and ultimately a shootout.
With the shootout score tied at 2-2, Ovechkin delivered again.
Ovechkin drove inside before he deked Jets goalie Laurent Brossoit, and scored off a filthy backhand shot.
Capitals goalie Braden Holtby shut the door Nikolaj Ehlers to preserve the Capitals’ second straight win.
Following the game Ovechkin admitted he plays it by ear during the shootout per Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press.
“I don’t know. Maybe. Sometimes even I don’t know what I’m gonna do out there. I’ll take it.”
