Howard upsets SC State to advance in MEAC Tournament

The Howard Bison extended their 2019-2020 season with a 70-63 upset of South Carolina State in the first round of the MEAC Tournament in Norfolk, Virginia, Tuesday night.

Howard’s senior guard Charles Williams had a game-high 24 points. Williams shot 6-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three. He was an impressive 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

South Carolina State (11-18) was led by senior guard Damani Applewhite with 22 points and nine rebounds.

The Bulldogs struggled with their shot, shooting 34.3% from the field, including just 2-of-19 from three.

The Bison jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back. South Carolina State rallied to cut their deficit to one at 39-38 early in the second half. However, Howard responded with a 17-3 run that spanned 5 minutes and 31 seconds.

Howard junior guard Kyle Foster scored nine of his 18 points during that stretch.

The win improved Howard to 4-28 on the season. They entered the MEAC tournament as the 10th seed and will face No. 2 seed North Carolina A&T Wednesday.

Howard lost their only meeting of the season to NC A&T on Feb. 22, 71-67. It was their 15th of a season-high 17 straight losses.
