Despite efforts to re-sign him, the Washington Redskins are losing converted-left guard Ereck Flowers to free agency. Flowers has agreed to a three-year deal worth $30 million with the Miami Dolphins, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Flowers will get an annual average of $10 million per year with his deal with Dolphins with close to $20 million guaranteed. According to JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington, the Redskins offered Flowers $8 million per year. He then opted to test free agency, landing a preferable deal.
Flowers found the deal he preferred with his hometown Dolphins. He now gets the chance to return back to Miami where he played both high school and college football. Speaking with ESPN’s Josina Anderson, Flowers said he was “excited” and that he “always” wanted to be home.
Flowers signed a one-year deal with the Redskins last year after being tabbed a first-round bust after struggling four seasons with the New York Giants and a short stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Flowers initially started training camp as the left tackle replacement for Trent Williams during his holdout. However, he was shifted to left guard by then-offensive line coach Bill Callahan.
The move resurrected his career and overshadowed his early struggles with the Giants.
First-year Redskins head coach Ron Rivera expressed interest in bringing back Flowers and right guard Brandon Scherff for 2020. While the team placed the franchise tag on Scherff in hopes working out a long-term deal, Flowers is now out of Redskins Park.
Washington drafted Wes Martin in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He started five games in place of an injured Scherff. Martin showed promise, but it’s unclear how Rivera and the Redskins’ new coaching staff views Martin as a potential replacement for departing Flowers.
