Cornberback Quinton Dunbar may be getting his wish and moving on from the Washington Redskins. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Redskins are shopping the disgruntled Dunbar for trade.
Shortly after Florio’s report, Dunbar took to Twitter.
Dunbar had been in talks for a contract extension with the Redskins’ previous regime led by Bruce Allen. He grew upset after those talks went silent following the firing of Allen and the hiring of new head coach Ron Rivera.
By not hearing from Rivera, Dunbar requested a trade or release from the team.
According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, Dunbar’s camp reached out to the Redskins for a “resolvable contract restructure,” however the Redskins declined the conversation.
Dunbar’s request for a trade was made clearer after the failed attempt for a new contract.
He is set to enter the final year of a three-year, $10.5 million deal this season that would pay him a non-guaranteed $3.25 million.
Converted from wide receiver, Dunbar emerged as the Redskins’ No. 1 cornerback. Last season, he led the team with four interceptions and eight passes defensed in 11 games. Pro Football Focus rated him the No. 2 overall cornerback in the NFL last season.
Dunbar’s strong play on the field has been marred by injuries. He has finished each of the past two seasons on injured reserve, missing a total of 14 games. In 2018, a shin injury forced him to miss nine games. Last season, he missed five games due to a lingering hamstring injury.
The Redskins signed free agent cornerback Kendall Fuller to a four-year, $40 million deal two years after the team traded him to Kansas City for Alex Smith. The move may have effectively made Dunbar available for trade.
